Description of Tennessee, US

Tennessee is a state located in the Southeastern region. Tennessee is the 36th-largest state in terms of land area and the 16th-largest in terms of population. It is surrounded by Kentucky to the north, Virginia to the northeast, North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi to the south, Arkansas to the southwest, and Missouri to the northwest. Tennesse is divided into three Grand Divisions based on its geographic location, cultural identity and legal status. When it comes to population density, Nashville is Tennessee's most populous city, and its largest metro area. Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Clarksville are also major cities. As of the 2020 United States Census, Tennessee's population is estimated to be 6.9 million people.

The Watauga Association, a 1772 frontier pact that is generally regarded as the first constitutional government west of the Appalachian Mountains, is the foundation of the state of Tennessee. In the eastern part of the state, "Tanasi" was a Cherokee town that existed prior to the arrival of the first European Americans in the area. Before its admission to the Union as the 16th state on June 1, 1796, Tennessee was a part of both North Carolina and the Southwest Territory. Early in its history, it was dubbed "The Volunteer State" because of its strong military tradition. As a slave state before the Civil War, Tennessee was politically split, with the west and middle regions of the state supporting the Confederacy and the east supporting the Union. As a result, Tennessee was the last state to secede and the first to rejoin the Union following the Civil War.

As Tennessee's economy diversified in the 20th century, it became less dependent on agriculture. In order to house the uranium enrichment facilities for the construction of the first atomic bombs, the Manhattan Project established the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the city of Oak Ridge during World War II. After World War II, the United States dropped these bombs on the Japanese Empire. After World War II, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory became a major scientific research facility. Tennessee was renamed in 2016 as a tribute to the contributions of Oak Ridge, Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee in its discovery. In addition to country, blues, rock 'n' roll, soul, and gospel, Tennessee has also played a significant role in the development of many popular music genres.

In terms of geography and landform, Tennessee has a wide range of options, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Upper South to the Deep South. Eastern North America's highest mountain ranges, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Cumberland Plateau, can be found along the state's eastern border. Tennesse's central region is characterized by cavernous bedrock and irregular rolling hills; West Tennessee is defined by flat, fertile plain. The Mississippi River forms the western border of the state, which is twice divided by the Tennessee River. Health care, music, finance, the automotive industry, chemicals, electronics, and tourism all play major roles in the country's economy, and the primary agricultural products include cattle, soybeans, corn, poultry, and cotton. Eastern Tennessee is home to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most popular national park in the United States.

Geographical Description of Tennessee

To the south of North Carolina lies Tennessee. The majority of the state is part of the Upland South, while the eastern third is part of Appalachia. Tennesse has a total land area of 42143 square miles (109150 square kilometers), of which water covers 926 square miles (2400 km2) (or 2.2%). Its land area ranks it as the 16th tiniest state in the union. With an average width of 112 miles (180 kilometers), the state is approximately 440 miles (710 kilometers) long from east to west and approximately 112 miles (180 kilometers) wide. East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee are the three grand divisions that make up the state's geography, culture, economy, and law. Kentucky and Virginia to the north; North Carolina to the east; Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi to the south; Arkansas and Missouri to the west; and Arkansas and Missouri to the north and west respectively. It shares the distinction of having the most state borders with Missouri. This state is divided into three by the river, and Murfreesboro serves as its center. Three-quarters of the state is in the Central Time Zone, with most of East Tennessee in Eastern Time. This river divides Middle and West Tennessee by a large margin.

The Blue Ridge Mountains form the eastern boundary of Tennessee, while the Mississippi River serves as its western boundary. The western boundary of the state has been shifted by flooding of the Mississippi River, which has shifted its course. Because of incorrect surveys, the northern border now begins north of latitude 36°30′ north and gradually shifts north to the actual 36°30′ parallel in West Tennessee, rather than the original northern border latitude of 36°30′. Following several decades of legal wrangling over how to divide Bristol between Virginia and its neighboring state, the United States Supreme Court finally decided the issue in 1893, dividing the city between the two states as a result. [183] For more than 150 years Georgia has argued that an 1818 survey erroneously placed Tennessee's southern border 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) south of the 35th parallel.

From east to west, Tennessee has six major physiographic provinces that are part of three larger regions: the Blue Ridge Mountains, Ridge and Valley Appalachians, and Cumberland Plateau; the Highland Rim and Nashville Basin, part of the Interior Low Plateaus of the interior plains; and the East Gulf Coastal Plain, part of the Atlantic Plains. Cumberland Mountains, Western Tennessee Valley, and Mississippi Alluvial Plain are among the other regions. Clingmans Dome, the third-highest peak in eastern North America, is the highest point in the state at 6,643 feet (2,025 m). In Memphis, the Mississippi River is its lowest point, at 178 feet (54 meters). More than 10,000 caves have been found in Tennessee, making it the cave capital of the world.

The ages of Tennessee's geological formations decrease westward as they follow the state's topography. Smoky Mountain igneous strata, some over a billion years old, can be found in the Blue Ridge Mountains, while the Mississippi Alluvial Plain and the river valleys that drain into the Mississippi are home to Tennessee's newest deposits of sands and silts. The state of Tennessee is considered seismically active and contains two major seismic zones, but destructive earthquakes are rare. Seismic activity in the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone (ETSZ) extends from northwestern Alabama to southwestern Virginia and is considered to be one of the most active zones in the Southeastern United States. After a series of devastating earthquakes between December 1811 and February 1812, Reelfoot Lake near Tiptonville was formed as a result of the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

Economy of Tennessee

With a GDP of $418.3 billion in 2021, Tennessee is one of the wealthiest states in the country. The state's personal income per resident is expected to reach $30,869 in 2020. Household income was $54,833 on average. More than a third (36.8 percent) of the population was living in poverty. It was estimated that there were 2,724,545 people employed in the state in 2019 and 139,760 business establishments in the state. Tennessee, like most of its southern neighbors, is a right-to-work state. As in the majority of the United States, unionization has historically been low and continues to decline.
